The Estonian Union of Persons With Mobility Impairment recognised RMK 22.02

At the recognition event “Deed of the Year 2011”, held by the Estonian Union of Persons with Mobility Impairment (EUPMI), on Friday, 17 February, the Union recognised the State Forest Management Centre (RMK), which has been striving towards also making their nature paths accessible for people who use mobility support devices.

According to Marge Rammo, Head of the Nature Management Department of RMK, this recognition was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. “We are of the opinion that there is still a lot left to do to enable movement without hindrances, but it is that much nicer to hear that what we have done has already been noticed," Marge Rammo said. “We take this gratitude as a reminder that we must continue our work in developing the infrastructure necessary for assisting the movement of people with special needs in nature.”

In the period 2010-2013, with the aid of two measures of the European Regional Development Fund, RMK is reconstructing several different nature protection sites. It is at those sites that the needs of people with mobility impairment have been taken into account, where possible.“For example, at nature centres, attention is paid to entrances, movement at exhibitions and in toilets, and in the case of infrastructure allowing movement in nature, entrances to watch towers and hiking trails are important,” Marge Rammo explained.

Good examples of where the needs of people with special needs – also including parents with baby prams, for example – have been taken into account when arranging movement in nature are Hiiu County, Ida-Viru County, Lääne County, Tartu County, Jõgeva County and Pärnu County, for example:

The EUPMI recognition event took place for the 19th time already. Over the years, 140 benefactors have received a token of appreciation; this year, 9 were added.
