The recreation area along the northern coast of Lake Peipus extends from Tammispää to Vasknarva. Here you can find the sand drifts of Järvevälja and Smolnitsa and also the singing sands along the shores of Lake Peipus, which demonstrates the cleanliness of the lake water. The landscape varies from long sand drift ridges to the bogs and marshes in between them. The great number of rivers in the recreation area favours the organising of boat trips and trips of various levels of difficulty. The area also includes the Kurtna lakes, the area with the largest number of lakes in Estonia, which is about 30 km2 wide and includes nearly 40 larger and smaller lakes.

The purpose of the recreation area is to make a lakeside holiday more interesting and provide people with possibilities for picking berries and mushrooms. In addition to the Kauksi camping site and the sand drifts, which are ideal for enjoying your holiday, you should also find some time to visit the Kotka hiking trail, taking you to the Rüütli bog islands. Also, go and try out the Selisoo hiking trail!

The recreation area is divided into three areas: Peipus, Kurtna and Tudu-Sonda.
